MOMMY-TO-BE

Healthy smiles for your baby begin during pregnancy. We recommend a consult at Camp Smiles to discuss steps you can take during to pregnancy to promote good oral health for mom and baby.

0-2 MONTHS OLD

Teething usually starts around 6 months and continues until 2-3 years old. Pacifier habits should be discontinued by the 2nd birthday. Be careful with the amount of juices and sugary drinks your little one consumes each day. We recommend no more than 4-6 ounces each day of these types of beverages for children over the age of 1 years old, and no juice or sugary drinks before the age of 1.

3-5 YEARS OLD

Keep the teeth clean with a pea sized amount of fluoridated tooth paste twice a day. Spaces will become much tighter so flossing is needed. Establish a fun nighttime routine that includes brushing teeth and flossing - we enjoy singing camp songs with our routine!

6-10 YEARS OLD

Around 6 years old, permanent teeth start coming along starting with the 6 year molars. We recommend sealants to prevent cavities in the deep grooves of the molars. Emphasize brushing in small circles around the gum-lines to help prevent gingivitis.  The American Dental Association(ADA) and American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) recommend orthodontic evaluation around 7 years of age.

11 YEARS OLD AND UP

During regular cleaning visits, we will educate your child on decisions regarding their oral health and overall nutrition. By this age most kids have their permanent teeth and proper dental hygiene should be demonstrated. At this age, it is important for children to begin to become more knowledgeable and responsible for their own dental health. Referrals for orthodontics are also given if needed again.

SPORTS DENTISTRY

We highly recommend the use of custom mouthguards for contact sports. While the main role of a fitted mouthguard is to protect the oral structure, studies are showing links to the prevention of concussions. Schedule a consult to learn more about custom mouth-guards.
