Nutritional Counseling

Essential to both overall health and oral/dental health is having a healthy, balanced diet. Children with a diet that is high in carbohydrates like sugars and starches have an increased risk for dental decay. In addition, sticky foods including candy, dried fruits and vitamins, also have a higher chances of causing cavities. As part of your routine examination, we will analyze your child’s diet for sources of dental decay and discuss nutritional alternatives.

Space Maintainers

Sometimes a primary, “baby” molar tooth may fall out early because of things like trauma, an infection, or due insufficient space in the mouth. If the permanent tooth underneath this baby tooth is not close to eruption, a space maintainer may be necessary. A space maintainer is a small appliance used due to insufficient space to hold space for permanent teeth until they are fully developed and ready to erupt in the future.

3300 School Form

The Georgia 3300 Form is required for all new pre-K, kindergarten and 1st grade students and all students that are new to the state of Georgia, as well as students switching from private to public school. Please contact us to schedule your dental examination if you need to have this form completed.

Many babies and young children suck on fingers, pacifiers, and other objects as source of security and to learn more about their surroundings. Many times the habit starts even before they are born. Normally these habits should end between the ages of 2-3 years old. If these habits remain beyond this time, long term problems may occur. We are here to help with intervention of these habits by offering advice, encouragement, support and other tools and techniques to help your child stop the habit at the appropriate time.

TREATMENT SERVICES

White Fillings & Restorations

A white filling is also called a composite filling or a resin filling. They are made up of a plastic, glass and ceramic compound. When a patient has a small cavity, sometimes a white filling is needed to restore the tooth. White fillings are similar in color and appearance to natural teeth, and are typically not noticeable.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as “laughing gas” or “happy air.” Nitrous oxide is sedative used to put an anxious child at ease. Sometimes a child may feel slightly anxious before or during their dental treatment and nitrous oxide can create feelings of happiness and relaxation when inhaled, allowing for more effective communication to further decrease patient anxiety and nervousness. Nitrous oxide is a very safe and effective behavior management tool that acts quickly, is non-allergic, and has no lingering effects after treatment.

Crowns

Even the best of us get large cavities, however when this happens in baby teeth the decay requires a lot of the tooth to be removed. When baby teeth have too much tooth structure removed, a regular filling will not work and may even lead to a broken filling or tooth. Silver crowns made up of stainless steel metal, are typically used to restore any tooth that has a very large cavity. We may refer to them as SSCs, silver hats or crowns.

Baby Root Canal

Sometimes when a cavity is very large and your child is experiencing throbbing pain or pain lasting a long time, including waking up at night this may indicate that the cavity may be near or inside the nerve of a baby tooth causing it to be infected and inflamed. In situations like this a baby root canal may be necessary, which involves removal of the infected part of the nerve and placement of a special medicine on top of the nerve.

PREVENTION

A dental sealant is a protective white or clear coating that is placed on the pits and grooves of permanent molars (back teeth). Dental sealants help make the chewing surfaces on molars smoother, which helps prevent food and bacteria from getting trapped inside the tooth crevices, and ultimately prevents cavities and decay.

Individualized Dental Care

Since every child is unique, their dental needs and treatment will be unique as well. At Decatur Camp Kids your child is not just a number, each child and their family is like our family. Every service your child receives will be tailored to them. We want to be your family’s resource for dental concerns and oral health information. We look forward to establishing trust and confidence with our patients and their family that will last a lifetime.

Age One Dental Home

Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and Pediatric Dentistry strongly recommend that children establish a “dental home” before their 1st birthday. Here at Decatur Camp Kids we welcome our youngest patients to begin their dental care with us and to continue throughout adolescence. The early establishment of a dental home at Decatur Camp Kids Pediatric Dentistry will hopefully provide us with the opportunity to implement preventative habits that can keep your child free from dental/oral decay and diseases.

Digital X-Rays

Dental radiographs (x-rays) are important diagnostic tools that provide valuable information that may not be noticed upon visual examination only. Due to rapid growth and changes in children, x-rays may be needed more frequently. Digital x-rays allow for safer diagnosis with less radiation than traditional x-rays. It may also allow us to detect dental decay at its earliest stage when treatment can be avoided or requires less dental treatment.

Dental Fluoride

When fluoride is used in small amounts on a routine basis along with a healthy diet and good oral hygiene, it helps to prevent tooth decay. It encourages “remineralization,” a strengthening of weakened areas on the teeth, and prevents acid made by bacteria from breaking down the teeth, thus decreasing the chance of tooth decay. Fluoride occurs naturally in water and in many different foods, as well as in dental products such as toothpaste, mouth rinses, gels, varnishes and supplements. Use of fluoride, while controversial, has been proven safe and effective for most, and can be used based on your child’s individual risk factors for dental decay.
