When fluoride is used in small amounts on a routine basis along with a healthy diet and good oral hygiene, it helps to prevent tooth decay. It encourages “remineralization,” a strengthening of weakened areas on the teeth, and prevents acid made by bacteria from breaking down the teeth, thus decreasing the chance of tooth decay.

Fluoride occurs naturally in water and in many different foods, as well as in dental products such as toothpaste, mouth rinses, gels, varnishes and supplements. Use of fluoride, while controversial, has been proven safe and effective for most, and can be used based on your child’s individual risk factors for dental decay.
